Andrean captured a sectional championship with a commanding 53-28 victory over Whiting in postseason play.
The game was played Saturday, Feb. 7, at a neutral site as part of the IHSAA Class 2A Girls Basketball State Tournament, with Andrean representing Merrillville against Whiting in the sectional final.
Andrean set the tone early and never looked back, controlling the pace on both ends of the floor while limiting Whiting’s offensive opportunities. The Fighting 59ers built separation as the game progressed, using disciplined defense and efficient scoring to open up a decisive margin by the second half. Andrean’s ability to rebound, generate steals, and convert in transition played a key role in the lopsided result.
The championship effort was led by a balanced group of contributors. Lailoni Staten paced the team offensively while also facilitating the offense and applying pressure defensively. Delaney Myers provided strength on the glass, helping Andrean control rebounding throughout the game. Ellie Benjamin anchored the defensive effort with active hands and timely steals, while the rest of the lineup contributed to a complete team performance.
