Andrean High School’s senior basketball player, Lailoni Staten, enters the season as the primary returning starter for the 59ers. She is expected to be a key figure in a young team that is adjusting after significant changes following last year’s conference-championship run.
According to recent reports, Andrean has faced a challenging schedule at the start of the season. The team has experienced losses against Washington Township, Wheeler, and Lake Central but secured victories over Portage and North Newton. This early performance indicates a team still in the process of forming its identity, heavily relying on Staten’s consistent play and defensive skills while younger players adapt to larger roles.
Staten is recognized for her defensive prowess, particularly her ability to pressure the ball and disrupt opposing guards. However, this season demands more from her offensively as Andrean transitions towards a perimeter-focused style of play. With much of last year’s scoring no longer available, Staten is tasked with driving into the paint and creating opportunities for her teammates.
Her leadership extends beyond her on-court contributions. As the only senior in regular rotation, Staten has embraced the role of guiding underclassmen by providing structure during practice sessions and setting an example with her physical play—a standard expected from Andrean’s veterans.
Looking ahead, Andrean girls’ basketball will host Hobart on Friday, December 6th at 7 p.m., aiming to build momentum as they progress into their schedule’s core.
