Andrean freshman Deshawn Jackson capped an impressive debut varsity season by competing at the IHSAA Boys Wrestling Semi-State at 285 pounds, emerging as one of the youngest heavyweights to advance deep into the postseason.
The semi-state was held Feb. 14 at East Chicago Central High School, where Jackson represented the Fighting 59ers against a veteran-heavy field after qualifying through the Hobart Regional.
Jackson finished the season with a 22-7 record and gained valuable experience throughout the postseason against several ranked Northwest Indiana opponents. At the Hobart Regional on Feb. 7, Jackson secured a quarterfinal victory with a pin in 5:14 over Hanover Central’s Jaevon Butler to clinch advancement. He ultimately placed fourth overall, earning his semi-state berth in one of the area’s most competitive heavyweight brackets.
Throughout the season, Jackson faced multiple ranked wrestlers, including Lake Central’s Jake Luedtke and Hobart’s Josh Diaz, building experience against some of the state’s top competition. At semi-state, Jackson battled Rochester’s Declan Gard in the championship bracket, competing against experienced upperclassmen as one of only a small number of freshmen still wrestling at 285 pounds.
Jackson’s postseason appearance highlighted a strong foundation for the Andrean program, as the freshman heavyweight closed his first varsity campaign with momentum heading into future seasons.
